ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The mission of the Accounting Program is to deliver a high quality professional accounting education to traditional and non-traditional students in our service region. The comprehensive curriculum offers an opportunity for students to learn about public, private, and governmental organizations; promotes an awareness of the context and consequences of professional decision-making; and emphasizes life-long learning. A student-oriented learning environment complemented by competent, professional faculty and staff supports our mission. The Accounting Program offers a 120 credit major, a 150 emphasis, a minor, and an associate degree. The program is designed to provide maximum flexibility to the student.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
There are numerous career opportunities available to SMSU accounting graduates. Possible career fields include public accounting, governmental accounting, industry, education, and banking. Employers of recent graduates include Hormel, Cargill, Wells Fargo Bank, Schwan’s Sales Enterprises, the State of Minnesota, the U.S. government, and various C.P.A. firms. Graduate school and professional certification such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Financial Manager (CFM), and Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) are also options for our graduates.

JOB SKILLS
To succeed in the accounting field, an individual must possess strong problem-solving, computer, and communication skills. Leadership skills and the ability to work as a team player are essential. Accounting majors are required to take specific courses to ensure that their skills in these areas are developed and enhanced.
