Preparing for the Interview
Research the Position:
- What skills are required?
- What knowledge will the interviewers be looking for?
- What is the job description-the responsibilities of the position?
Research the Company:
- Find out the mission statement of the company
- Read press releases and news articles on the company
- View the company’s website
- Explore the company’s expectations of their employees
- Explore the company’s philosophy on community service
- Talk with people you know who work for the company
Research Yourself:
- What are your strengths?
- What are your opportunities for improvement?
- How does your education support the position you are seeking?
- What are your short and long term goals?
- What are your interests?
- What awards/recognition have you previously received?
Match Yourself to the Position:
- How do your strengths and education relate to the position you are seeking?
- How will your skills make you successful in this position?
- How do your short and long term goals relate to that of the company?
Practice for the Interview:
- Review the “Typical Job Interview Questions” handout
- Conduct a mock interview with a career counselor.
- Review the “Interview Questions You Should Ask Employers” handout and write out at least 3-5 questions for the interviewer
Things to Remember for the Interview:
- A professional binder and professional pen
- Extra copies of your resume
- At LEAST 3-5 questions for the interviewer
- Arrive 10 minutes early for your appointment
- Overdress rather than under dress
- If appropriate, bring your portfolio
