Published Thursday, April 17, 2025
Dear SMSU Community,
I hope this message finds you well. It is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement as President of Southwest Minnesota State University, effective following the May commencement.
Serving as your President has been an incredible honor, and I am deeply proud of all that we have accomplished together. During my tenure, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing remarkable growth and achievement across our university. Our enrollment has increased by nearly 20%—a testament to the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff, and students. Last fall, we recorded our highest enrollment in 14 years, and that momentum continues. Additionally, we have successfully raised nearly $24 million toward our $30 million campaign—an important milestone that will significantly enhance resources and opportunities for our university.
We have introduced several new programs that align with the evolving needs of our students and the job market, reinforcing our commitment to providing a high-quality affordable education. Furthermore, we have forged strong partnerships with regional industries and businesses and completed significant campus renovations, ensuring that our facilities remain modern, functional, and conducive to learning.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve this community and want to express my heartfelt appreciation to everyone who has embraced my leadership and supported me throughout the years.
I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together, and I have no doubt that SMSU will continue to thrive and excel in the years to come. Thank you for your unwavering support, dedication, and commitment to our university.
Warm regards,
Kumara Jayasuriya
President
