The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team earned ‘special mention’ by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association for its outstanding work in the classroom during the 2023-24 academic year. The Mustangs posted a 3.641 cumulative grade point average during the year ranking 26th among all NCAA Division II programs and second highest in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

"The WBCA is pleased to recognize those women's basketball programs that have committed themselves to excellence on the court and in the classroom," said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. "The 112 teams we honor this year strive to achieve all-around success and we commend their efforts. Congratulations!"

SMSU had 10 student-athletes named to the NSIC All-Academic team in March. Seniors Madison Gehloff, Hannah Parsley, and Sam Wall, along with junior Bri Stoltzman, were also named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team.

SMSU finished the 2023-24 season 19-12 overall, placed fifth in the 15-team NSIC with a 15-7 record and advanced to the NSIC tournament semifinals for the second straight season. SMSU has won a combined 38 games the past two seasons, which is the program's highest two-year win total since the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons.
