The SMSU Student Association is hosting a summer Blood Drive with the American Red Cross on Tuesday, July 30 from 11:00am to 5:00pm in the SMSU Conference Center Lower Level.
- Donor promotion: All donors who are 18 years-old or older will be entered to win a 2025 Ram 1500 Big Horn.

Facts About the Need for Blood
- There is only about a 3-5 day blood supply in the U.S.
- Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood or platelets
- Only about 3% of age-eligible people donate blood yearly even though about 62% of the U.S. population is eligible
- The average red blood cell transfusion is about 3 units
Important Reminders for Donors
- Only the most critical patients receive blood! Blood donors can feel good knowing that their blood is going to someone who needs it to live. The cost to donors is just one hour of their time (or less) and they are giving the gift of life to someone in need.
- When a donor schedules a blood donation appointment, the Red Cross commits their blood donation to a hospital. If they don’t show up to their scheduled appointment, that means that the Red Cross is unable to fulfill the blood product order to the hospital! Encourage donors who can’t make their appointment to cancel it with as much notice as possible by going online or by calling the 1-800 Red Cross number.
