3rd Annual SingFest Oct. 12

Southwest Minnesota State University will host the third annual SingFest on Monday, Oct. 12.
SingFest is an event that began three years ago to give area high school students an opportunity to sing with a large mass choir. It is an opportunity that they might not otherwise receive through their high school music experiences.
Over the course of the day, students will learn four pieces of music for choir. Two of the works are for full mixed choir, one is for men's group and one for a women's group. The day will be spent in large group rehearsals, as well as sectionals. The sectionals will be run by some upper-level SMSU students.
The SMSU Chorale will also participate over the course of the day, giving the high school students the experience of singing with college-level vocalists. At the end of the day, participants will get together and perform in the Fine Arts Theatre at 1:45 p.m.
“SingFest is one of the highlights of our fall choral schedule,” said event coordinator Dr. Stephen Kingsbury, an associate professor of music at SMSU. “It is also a great opportunity for the high school students to engage with a type of choral singing to which they wouldn't otherwise have access.”
This year the students will be coming from Lakeview, Marshall and Red Rock Central High Schools. Kingsbury is expecting approximately one hundred high school students to be in attendance.
