Fine Arts Celebration Features the Talents of SMSU Community

There will be something for everyone at the eleventh annual Fine Arts Celebration, being held March 28 through April 30 at Southwest Minnesota State University.
Vocal and instrumental concerts, theatre productions, readings, art displays, costume making and more are on the schedule.
“This is a way to highlight the fine work of our talented students and faculty,” said event coordinator Dr. Pat Brace. “The majority of the events are free to the public, and we invite people to check the schedule and come to campus for some of the events.”
SMSU English Professor Marianne Zarzana and Emeritus English Professor Jim Zarzana will have a duo reading of their work on April 10. English Professors Anthony Neil Smith and Susan McLean will read their work on April 17 and 25, respectively. In addition, contributors to the literary journal Perceptions will read on April 19.
A number of concerts are planned, including: Men’s Glee Club & Bella Voce, April 6; Spring Sing, April 9; SMSU Symphonic Chamber Winds, April 10; SMSU Jazz Ensemble, March 28 and April 17; SMSU/Community Concert Band, April 22; Southwest Minnesota Orchestra Annual Children’s Concert, April 25; and the SMSU Chorale, April 27.
Into the Woods by James Lapine will be performed April 20-22 and April 28-30. The play is a collaboration between the SMSU and Marshall High School theatre programs. The Schwan Community Center for the Performing Arts (SCCPA) will be the site of the play the first week, and it will be hosted in the SMSU Fine Arts Theatre the second week.
Students play a big part in the Fine Arts Celebration and will be featured throughout. The Forensics Showcase will be March 28; student recitals will be held on April 5, 12, 15, 19 and 26; Theatre Arts senior showcases will be April 8 and 9; creative writing and forensics students will give presentations April 10, 13, 17, and 22; a reception for Art and Graphic Design students showing their work in the Whipple Gallery will be April 22; senior art reviews will be April 24; Communication Studies senior project presentations will be April 17 and 24; and students will create theatre costumes during the Fashion Runway competition April 24.
Micah Bloom will give an alumni artist presentation April 7. A Phil Dacey and Leo Dangel Tribute Reading will be held April 29.
New this year is “SMSU Mustang Ovations,” a salute to academic success, distinctiveness, and meaningful engagement. Students will be honored at a reception on April 13.
The reception honoring the Whipple Scholarship winner will be held on Tuesday, March 28.
A Faculty and Staff Art Show will be in the William Whipple Gallery from April 6-14. SMSU senior Art & Graphic Design students will display their work from April 17-28 in the Whipple Gallery.
The Marshall Area Story Tellers (MAST) along with the Theatre Program will give a presentation on April 5. The Theatre Program will also hold a program in conjunction with National Library Week on April 11. Student Academy Awards will be held April 26.
The Fine Arts Celebration is sponsored by the Department of Fine Arts and Communication, the Creative Writing Program and the English Department.
