SMSU Music Program to Host Brass-a-Palooza, Feb. 4
Published Tuesday, January 17, 2023
The Southwest Minnesota State University Music Program will host “Brass-a-Palooza” on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on the campus of SMSU.
The event is a celebration of brass music and learning and is open to all area brass players, regardless of age, experience, or ability. It is also open to directors and other musicians interested in brass performance.
Brass-a-Palooza will feature guest artist Daniel Kitchens, French Horn player.
Principal Horn with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra since 2016, Kitchens has performed with orchestras across the world including the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, The Minnesota Orchestra, and the National Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. Mr. Kitchens completed his studies at Texas Christian University, the Royal College of Music in London, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and Southern Methodist University (Texas). In 2021, Daniel was honored to make his solo debut with the SDSO, performing Strauss’ Second Horn Concerto—a concert he still gets a rush to think about.
Warm-ups begin at 9 a.m., followed by brass choir rehearsal, a guest artist recital, lunch, masterclass, brass choir rehearsal, and a final concert at 5 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. The final concert is free and open to the public.
Early registration is $20 by January 27. After January 27, registration is $30. Registration includes lunch. Applications and information available online at www.SMSU.edu/go/brassapalooza.
