Charles Kauffman has a Bachelor of Music degree in church music and music education from Yankton College Conservatory, a Master of Music degree in piano performance from University of South Dakota, a Master of Arts in Religion from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and completed all but a dissertation in piano pedagogy & music history at Louisiana State University. He taught K-12 instrumental/vocal music for one year at Niobrara, Nebraska, and piano and organ at Freeman Junior College for three years. In 1970 he became a faculty member at Southwest Minnesota State University. His teaching responsibilities at SMSU included music theory, music history, applied piano, organ, piano pedagogy, American music, and world music. In 1993 he received a Fulbright group grant to go to Indonesia to study its culture and music. He has collected instruments from around the world, presently over 100 instruments, which he taught to students in his classes. He was also responsible for the development of the music computer laboratory, which he maintained for the program. For three years he was coordinator of the Music Program. Mr. Kauffman has performed solo piano and organ recitals and chamber music throughout the Midwest. He has also given numerous presentations on Indonesian music.
