Southwest Minnesota State University will host the traveling exhibit, INCLUSION, at the Library Plaza in Bellow Academic on the campus of SMSU from Friday, September 6 through Monday, September 23, 2024.

The INCLUSION exhibit features a series of storyboards that chronicle—from 1900 to the present—the story of a forgotten minority. The display illustrates the journey of Minnesotans with developmental disabilities and their families and tells of their struggles to increase independence, productivity, self-determination, integration, and inclusion. The exhibit is presented by the Minnesota Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities.

INCLUSION offers visitors a deeper understanding and perspective as Minnesotans with developmental disabilities work towards greater inclusion. Through photos and time, learn about:

  • Society's perception and treatment of people with developmental disabilities for the past century.
  • The important role of parents of children with developmental disabilities and self-advocates in the pursuit of better living conditions, educational rights, and employment opportunities.
  • The Partners in Policymaking® program and the self-advocacy movement.
  • Key legal actions and decisions that work to ensure the Constitutional rights of people with developmental disabilities.
  • What can be done to support people with developmental disabilities to enjoy the same rights as everyone.

The exhibit includes scannable QR codes to invite visitors to explore the stories, watch videos, and access information in greater depth for an immersive learning experience. The exhibit is free and open to the public during SMSU’s regular building hours.

The exhibit visit was secured for display at SMSU by Vickie Abel, Coordinator of Accessibility Services. For more information on Accessibility Services at SMSU or to request accommodations to participate in the exhibit, please contact Vickie.abel@SMSU.edu, call 507-537-7318, or use the Minnesota Relay Service at 1-507-627-3529.
