Student Resources
Student Placement in Writing Classes
Initial placement for native-speaking students is be based upon the ACT or SAT exam.
Placement for international students is based on the Accuplacer exam. International students will not be placed in composition courses until they complete the Accuplacer exam.
SMSU Writing Center
The Writing Center is a free, on-campus resource for all currently enrolled students. Students can bring in papers and other work from any of their classes to be reviewed by peers. Students can make an appointment on the SMSU Writing Center website.
Purdue Owl is a great source for writers who have questions regarding grammar, format, and many other issues that may arise when creating pieces for all of their classes. This site includes rules for American Psychological Association (APA) and Modern Language Association (MLA) formatting.
Video Picks are a few helpful tutorials found on the SMSU Writing Center website for quick reference.
Writing Center Resources is a collection of resources for students, faculty, teachers, and some specific sources for English as a Second Language (ESL) students. It includes Facts for Faculty, Resources for Writers, Tools for Teachers, and ESL.

Many of the students in the Academic Writing classes are very talented and have produced great work. Compiled here is a gallery to showcase their efforts and to give future students an idea of what different types of writing they will be doing in each of the classes and programs within Academic Writing.
