Math Course Placement

Follow the steps below to place students into the appropriate Math course(s).

STEP 1:

Any of the following minimum scores may place a student into MATH 110: College Algebra.

• COURSE CODE: MATH 110
• ACT Math: 22 or above
• SAT Math: 530 or above
• MCA: 1158 or above
• Accuplacer Intermediate Algebra: 60 or higher
• Accuplacer - Next Gen (Advanced Algebra Functions): 250 or above

OR

STEP 2:

If a student’s cumulative High School GPA is a 2.80 or above and a C- or higher in high school algebra II (or higher), or if a student’s cumulative High School GPA is 2.70 or above with and of the following scores, the student will place into MATH 110: College Algebra.

• COURSE CODE: MATH 110
• ACT Math: 20-21
• SAT Math: 520-529
• MCA: 1152-1157
• Accuplacer Intermediate Algebra: 50 or higher
• Accuplacer - Next Gen (Advanced Algebra Functions): 236-249

OR

STEP 3:

For a student whose cumulative High School GPA is below a 2.70, any of the following scores will place them into MATH 110: College Algebra, but it must be accompanied with the co-requisite MATH 090. These scores alone will not place students into MATH 110, unless they also take MATH 090 during the same semester, and students who do not register for both will be dropped from MATH 110.

• COURSE CODE: MATH 110 & MATH 090
• ACT Math: 18-21
• SAT Math: 430-519
• MCA: 1140-1151
• Accuplacer Intermediate Algebra: 40 or higher
• Accuplacer - Next Gen (Advanced Algebra Functions): 235 or below

OR

STEP 4:

Anyone who does not fall into one of the above three categories may take MATH 090 and MATH 110. Please contact Kaitlyn Giles for more information: Kaitlyn.Giles@SMSU.edu

Validation period

The period the entrance exam score, high school GPA, and acceptable placement score is valid for purposes of course placement.

• SAT, ACT, MCA: 5 calendar years
• High School GPA: 10 calendar years
• ACCUPLACER Math: 2 calendar years
