AEDs

While only 50% of sudden cardiac arrest victims will initially need a shock, nearly all will require CPR to increase the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart and brain.

Southwest Minnesota State University has 10 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at various locations around Campus. SMSU Public Safety Staff are trained annually on CPR, AED use and first aid.

AED Locations

AEDs can be found in many buildings on campus. Click on the link below to view the locations of AEDs. [Coming soon]

In addition to publicly accessible AEDs, Marshall Police have AEDs in all police vehicles. North Memorial Ambulances and EMTs on duty are also equipped with AEDs.

If You Used an AED

If your area’s AED was used for a medical emergency, please contact the AED coordinator as soon as possible after the emergency is over. The fastest way to reach us is by email at dave.hemp@smsu.edu.

You can also call 507-537-6470. We will have someone over within 2 business days to service the device.

If Your AED Is Beeping

We provide routine servicing of the AEDs, and usually address issues before the AED can identify them. The AEDs here at the University perform regular self-tests. If a unit is beeping, it has identified a problem. Email dave.hemp@smsu.edu and we’ll send someone to service it, usually within 2 business days.

In most cases, even when the device is beeping, it will do its job at least one more time if necessary.
