A perennial growing 1 to 3 feet tall, with stiff, erect stems, sunflower-like heads, and opposite leaves that have wide, toothed blades. The leaves are up to 6 inches long and 3½ inches wide. The flower heads have raised centers and are 2 to 4 inches wide. The yellow rays remain attached to the head after withering.
